Basic process<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Grasping the actual production flow is the fastest way to understand the design rules.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Dye-sublimation is a \u201cprint-then-transfer\u201d technology\u2014identical in principle to the processes used for custom mouse pads, T-shirts, phone cases, etc. Publicly available information can be summarized in two steps:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • A piezoelectric inkjet printer (almost always an Epson) prints sublimation inks onto sublimation paper or PET.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • A heat press or vacuum transfer machine applies high temperature and pressure to migrate the dyes into the final product.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What sets keycaps apart from conventional products is that, throughout the industry\u2019s development, they continue to be evaluated against the legacy standards of traditional manufacturing techniques\u2014such as laser engraving, screen printing, or double-shot molding. As a result, there are stricter requirements for the post-transfer positioning, color accuracy, and consistency. For manufacturers, this poses a significant challenge in controlling the entire production process\u2014such as ensuring the stability of the printing output, as well as the design of jigs and equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Process classification<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Heat-press method<\/b> : used for single-face (front-only)\u2014Top dye-sub.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Advantages:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Fast production speed<\/span><\/span> <\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>20\u201360 seconds<\/span>.
      <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • High transfer efficiency<\/span> :<\/span>Uses<\/span> <\/span>mature sublimation transfer paper<\/span> <\/span>with reliable performance.
      <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Precise positioning<\/span> :<\/span>Ensures accurate pattern placement<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Disadvantages:<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      • High keycap material requirements<\/span><\/span>\u2013 Any<\/span> <\/span>burrs<\/span><\/span>, shrinkage, or surface defects<\/span> on the keycap can cause printing issues.<\/span>
        <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      •  <\/span>High cost of custom fixtures<\/span>\u2013 The <\/span>required <\/span>heat press molds are structurally complex<\/span>, requiring consideration of <\/span>thermal expansion, deformation, and other factors<\/span>.<\/span>
        <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • Strict environmental control needed<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Vacuum Sublimation Method<\/b> <\/span>:<\/span> used for five-sides sublimation (top + four side surfaces)
        <\/span>Advantages:
        <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Low equipment barrier \u2013 Can quickly set up production using standard commercial sublimation machines.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        •  Full-surface printing \u2013 Allows printing on all visible surfaces of the keycap.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Disadvantages:
          <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

            \n
          • Difficult to control positioning & color consistency<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
          • High cost of PET<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
          • Color inconsistency on keycap Sides<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
          • Longer production time,180\u2013240 seconds <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
          • Poor consistency in commercial machines \u2013 standard vacuum sublimation machines have limited adjustable parameters, making fine process control difficult.  <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Color & Color Space
            <\/i><\/b><\/p>

            Key points to note:
            <\/span>\u25cf<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>RGB<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is the most commonly used color space for sharing images.<\/span>However,\u00a0<\/span>for keycap design<\/span>, we recommend using the\u00a0<\/span>CMYK color space<\/span>.<\/span>While its color range is relatively smaller, it produces colors that are\u00a0<\/span>closer to real-world appearance<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

            \u25cf\u00a0Scale your design to the actual keycap size on a 4K display \u2013 dye-sublimation can reproduce details visible to the naked eye.

            Color Difference Standards<\/strong><\/em><\/p>

            \u25cf\u00a0During dye-sublimation production, we perform visual inspections and use colorimeters for color matching.<\/p>

            \u25cf\u00a0The acceptable color difference (\u0394E) standards are:
            Between mass production and samples: \u0394E < 2;Within the same batch: \u0394E < 1.5<\/span><\/p>

            \u25cf\u00a0Keycap samples and paper color swatches have different textures, making them difficult to match precisely. We strive to adjust the colors to closely resemble the paper swatches.<\/p>

            \u25cf\u00a0However, colorimeters only provide one quantitative reference for color differences. In actual production, we sometimes observe noticeable visual discrepancies even when \u0394E values are small. This is partly due to the human eye\u2019s higher sensitivity to blue tones.<\/p>
